Fantasynth is made by Carlos Ulloa, working at the intersection of music, code, and visuals since 1999.
His first music experience came in 2011 with Lights, a WebGL/Three.js piece commissioned by Interscope Records for Ellie Goulding. It won an SXSW Interactive Award (Motion Graphics) and was featured as a Google Chrome Experiment. Source code available on GitHub.
HelloRun followed in 2013, a Three.js browser game driven by the pace and rhythm of "Surging Memories" by Du Tonc. It won a Webby (Best Game), two Lovies (Best Game, Best HTML5), and was also a Google Chrome Experiment.
The series explores music experiences built around procedurally generated graphics.
It began with a submission to the 2015 Oculus Mobile VR Jam, built for the Gear VR in Unity.
Fantasynth One was released in 2017 for PC VR, built in Unreal Engine 4 and set to music by French electronic producer N'to. It explored procedurally generated graphics. Official Selection at SIGGRAPH.
Fantasynth 2 followed in 2022 for Meta Quest, also built in Unreal Engine 4, with music by Carbon Based Lifeforms. It explored walkable space in free-roam VR.
These experiences were built around specific songs. Fantasynth XR, a 2024 submission to the Meta Quest Presence Platform Hackathon, started the instrument approach that became today's Fantasynth.
